I was inspired to make this wall hanging after looking at a photo of the Knobbed Hornbill, a glorious tropical bird that is native to Indonesia, and faunal symbol of Sulawesi, a place of great mystery and tribal traditions. It is characterized by its strikingly colorful helmet that reminds me of little hat that is surmounted by its prominent yellow beak that is streaked with orange, red, and purple. I made this piece by loosely twisting and turning bittersweet vines with one continuous circle of hand dyed yellow, orange, purple, and red reeds.
